At full power, the voltage across the LEDs was 220Vdc When dimmed to where the light cut out it was 207Vdc. I removed the silicone-coated glass bulb cover and found it was still possible to operate the light and probe for some voltages.
60 W EQUIVALENT LED WARM LIGHT CREED DRIVER
I erroneously assumed this meant the LED driver components were potted. I had to get my ear within 18 inches to hear any noise at all. Along with flicker, audible noise can be a problem for LED bulbs. I used both a Lutron Maestro dimmer and a garden-variety cheap triac dimmer, and the dimming was smooth at all times. It dims nicely with no flicker or flash as it turns off. Cree does offer the bulb in a much cooler 5000K temperature and prices it a bit higher, most likely because at the cooler temperatures the bulb is more efficient at producing light: The 5000K bulb requires only 9W to produce 800 lumens compared to the 9.5W of the 2700K I tested. The color temperature of 2700K - a standard color temperature for LED replacement bulbs -is warm and pleasant.
1 and, while a little heavier, is still quite light: 4 oz. The Cree bulb has a similar shape to an incandescent bulb Fig. This tear down continues the design examination begun in last month’s LEDs Magazine article, " Cree and Philips take divergent approaches to sub-$15 LED lamps" and an article in sister publication Illumination in Focus, " Cree and Philips drive LED lamp price toward $10."Īppearance is important for an LED bulb: For example, the Philips L Prize bulb’s unconventional secondary phosphor yellow-when-off bulb is a drawback for some and a plus for others. Cree has entered the LED replacement bulb market with its own name brand bulb.
